Kentucky Trophy Deer Contest & Displays

Overview

Bring your trophy deer to be scored in our Trophy Deer Contest. Get you deer’s official score, show off your deer and compete for an award.

Dale Weddle and a team of four other official measurers will be present Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Dale is an official measurer for Boone & Crockett, Pope & Young, Buckmasters Trophy Records and Longhunter Society. He has served as a panel measurer for Boone & Crockett and Pope & Young and is Regional Director for Buckmasters Trophy Records. Weddle is an award-winning freelance outdoor writer and photographer and a member of the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association. He has written and had published over 200 articles on Kentucky’s trophy whitetail deer.

Qualifying deer may be entered in Boone & Crockett, Pope & Young, Longhunter Society or Buckmasters Trophy Records by arrangement with individual measurers who score your deer. Record book entry fees vary and are in addition to show contest and entry pricing. There will be a special discounted price of $10 for entering your deer in Buckmasters Trophy Records (BTR).

How to Enter the Expo Deer Contest

There is no advance entry; just bring your trophy to the Expo.

Expo Contest Registration

 

First, if you have not purchased an admission ticket to the Expo, return to the Box Office or CLICK HERE to purchase a 1-day Ticket or Weekend Pass in advance online.

Once you have your Expo ticket, proceed to the trophy registration table. There, you will pay your entry fee and be given the necessary paperwork. Do not fill out paperwork at this time but take it along and follow the directions to the designated measuring area and give to a measurer who will assist in filling it out.

Additional contest entries (ex; you bring two deer to be scored) are $20 each. Pre-scored deer are $10 each to enter the contest. If pre-scored you must provide your own proof of official score with a copy of the official score sheet.  The official scoresheet must be signed by an official measurer and/or include an official measurer number on the front of scoresheet.

Trophy Contest Categories, Rules and Eligibility

There are four ways to win. (1) FANS CHOICE – will be voted on by show attendees, (2) RANDOM DRAW – one deer will be chosen by random draw from all entries entered in the contest and in attendance, (3) BIGGEST TYPICAL – deer with less than 15 inches of abnormal or irregular points with go into the typical category for purposes of the contest with winner determined by highest gross score, (4) BIGGEST NON-TYPICAL – deer with 15 or more inches of abnormal or irregular points will go into the non-typical category for purposes of the contest with winner determined by highest gross score.    

  • Entries do not need to be mounted, but they must have a solid skull plate and must be clean of flesh.
  • Entries may be in-state or out-of-state whitetail deer
  • Entries may be from most recent or past seasons.
  • Deer may be scored on Boone & Crockett systems forms or Buckmasters system forms and given a gross score for posting.                          

Awards - Trophy Contest

  • Award presentations begin at 3:00 p.m. Sunday in Seminar Area A.
  • Trophy (deer) must be present to win.

Checkout Process

All contest entries will be hung on display boards and must remain on display until released Sunday at 3:00 p.m. There are no check-outs whatsoever of any trophies between noon and 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

Early Checkouts

Early check-out (before noon Sunday) -- there will be a $10 early checkout fee per trophy. Early check-outs disrupt the measuring process and on Sunday disrupt the checking of entry lists to determine accuracy of filing, production of winner lists, and all other necessary wrap-up paperwork.

Measure-Only Non-Contest Entries

Get an official score of any in-state and out-of-state whitetails. You will be required to buy a ticket to the expo and pay a $20 fee.

SHEDS-Measure-Only Non-Contest Entries

Just get a score of your shed(s) for a $10 fee per shed. There is no contest for sheds.  Sheds grossing 75 or more inches may be entered in Buckmasters Trophy Records for the special Buckmasters entry fee of $10.  This is to be arranged with a BTR measurer and is in addition to the Show Fee.

Shed(s) will be measured only after all trophy contest entries have been measured. There shouldn't be a problem getting all "measure-only" trophies measured. Measuring crews in the past have been able to do so. The fee is returned if the shed(s) has not yet been measured when the attendee is ready to leave. No check-outs between noon and 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
